EVA: AI-driven innovation in engineering by SIAD Macchine Impianti

On the contemporary industrial scene, where efficiency and digitalization are key elements for competitiveness, SIAD Macchine Impianti (SIAD MI) has launched an ambitious project to optimize the processes of its Engineering division. The initial goal was to streamline project archiving and simplify the reference of documentation, ensuring a more efficient and intuitive workflow without altering established methods.
EVA - Engineering Virtual Assistant, an artificial intelligence-based virtual assistant designed to optimize project research and technical documentation, has been operational since 2024. This tool, developed in collaboration with Mònade, a digital studio specializing in user-centric software solutions, represents a strategic innovation that is able to enhance the company's information assets and support the work of the team.
The operation of EVA is based on an instruction algorithm (prompt) designed by SIAD MI to query a dynamic knowledge base that collects codes, regulations, internal guidelines, design specifications, and documentation pertaining to previously implemented solutions. Using an advanced conversational interface, artificial intelligence allows operators to access the information they need quickly, reducing the time spent searching and comparing sources.
A distinctive aspect of EVA is its capability for advanced interaction with a Large Language Model (LLM) through the Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) process, a system that enables the virtual assistant to provide detailed and contextualized responses to user needs in a highly specialized and technical context. This feature not only simplifies information management, but also helps to preserve and enhance the company's historical know-how.
The implementation of EVA is part of a broader technology development and improvement strategy at SIAD MI, which has led the company to collaborate with the Intellimech Consortium, a network of smart factories, and to participate in the Knowledge Management cluster with the aim of evaluating the tool and identifying strategic partnerships to continue developing the solution.
Currently, EVA is used exclusively by the Engineering division, however, the potential of the system suggests possible expansion to other company divisions.
The introduction of an AI assistant is not just an evolution in information management, but a strategic choice to enhance the wealth of multidisciplinary skills, optimize data management, and turn digital innovation into a tangible company asset.
