Paolo Viacava and Mailin win the SIAD-Bombola d’Oro Trophy

05 Jun 2017

Last race day for the Dinghy fleet. There was only a light breeze for the last races. Paolo Viacava from Portofino wins the Trophy for the fourteenth time

There were light wind conditions on the second day of the SIAD-Bombola d’Oro races, but the regatta committee managed to start the last two and keep the game open for the top places in the standings. An area where the first three were separated by just a few points, but with the possibility of discard of the worst race. With a string of excellent results on the previous two days (2-1-2-3), Paolino Viacava, the last dinghy to leave Portofino, tackled today's races aware of having a slight advantage over his direct competitors, like Enrico Negri and Paco Rebaudi.

Shortly after the start of the first race, however, the lack of wind forced the regatta committee to shorten the route to the end of the first downwind leg. Therefore a 'short' race won by Gaetano Allodi, followed by Enrico Negri, with the constant Paco Rebaudi coming third.

Increasing the suspense, the committee started the second race which saw the first three places occupied by Leporati, Pasquini and Rebaudi. Paolino Viacava finished with an excellent fourth place and, thanks to the discard of today's race, as well as proving to be a true champion, won the legendary Bombola d’Oro for the fourteenth time. Enrico Negri of AVAV came second, and Paco Rebaudi third for the colors of the Santa Margherita Ligure Sailing Club. In the Master 65 section, Filippo Jannello achieved a brilliant result with the very fast Cicci. The SIAD-Bombola d’Argento Trophy went to Dani Colapietro De Maria who, with Abbidubbi, reached the top of the Classics ranking and received a splendid Luca Ferron half hull. The Giovanni Falck Trophy, for the best team, went to the Cajega team (Viacava-Jannello-d'Albertas), and first among women, Francesca Lodigiani with Cavallo Indomito for the Santa Margherita Ligure Sailing Club colors.

The SIAD-Bombola d’Oro Trophy remains an occasion not to be missed for all dinghy sailors. Firstly for the spectacular race field and territory, and also for the hospitality of SIAD which, last night, invited over 400 guests to the traditional gala dinner at the pier, preceded by an aperitif on the terrace of Yacht Club Italiano.

The award ceremony took place on board Nave Italia which, like a big mother hen, followed the races of the little monotypes. It was particularly striking to see the 3-meter dinghies alongside the cruise ship Crown Princess (that can carry 3000 passengers) at anchor this morning in Santa Margherita; a Leviathan almost as long as 100 dinghies placed in a row.

The SIAD-Bombola d’Oro Trophy is organized by Yacht Club Italiano with the partnership of the SIAD Group, which operates in the industrial gases, healthcare, LPG and natural gas sectors, and with the collaboration of the Santa Margherita Ligure Sailing Club and Circolo Nautico Rapallo. The regatta is held under the patronage of the Municipalities of Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo.
